Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was an Italian priest and mystic of the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor.

Beatified in 1999, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.

Like the Apostle Paul, Padre Pio placed the Cross of the Lord at the center of his life and his apostolic work, which was his strength, his wisdom and his glory. Inflamed by love for Jesus Christ, he became similar to Him in sacrificing himself for the salvation of the world.

On 7 September 1910 under the elm tree of Piana Romana, Padre Pio received the stigmata.
